I own a property in Jacksonville Florida on the St John's River. I recently cleared a bunch of scrub trees and shrubs on the 535 foot property line with my neighbor. I then planted around 25 bouganvillas of various colors along the line. My neighbor sent me a registered letter saying that these plantings are invasive and would soon be encroaching on his property. According to the other neighbors, he's prone to filing lawsuits. I want to keep them for several reasons, beauty, privacy security and ease of care once established. My plan is to prune them a hedge around 4 foot high eventually. I have a Stihl HS81 professional hedge trimmer. How much room would you recommend I plant them from the property line? I was thinking 2 feet. Bruce

    Hi Bruce,

If you're going to be establishing these in the ground for many years to come, then I would give it some more room from the property line. It would also depend on the varieties that you chose. If they're vigorous, fast growers, I would give it close to 5-6 feet. Moderate growers - 2-4 feet. Dwarf varieties would only need about 2 feet. To form a nicely shaped hedge, you'll have to stay on top of a regular trim schedule - say, every 30-45 days. Unkempt bougainvillea planted in the landscape can get 20 wide if you let it get out of hand. Sounds like you're all set with your professional hedge trimmer - nice thinking!

    Thanks for the question,
    Kellie
