Hi. I bought some beautiful bougainvilleas from BGI at Home Depot yesterday. I bought the Bougain Fertilizer, but could not find the soil you sell. I realize I can get it at your online store, but shipping is crazy!
What type of store bought soil would work for me? I am planting outside next to my fence so it will crawl up and over. Is there anywhere in NE Florida that sells BGI Select Soil?..specifically in St. Augustine?
    Thanks!

    Hi Redpops,

We are currently working with Home Depot to get BGI Select Soil in the Florida stores, but it may not be until next year.

When shopping, look for any "quick drain" soil. Stay away from "moisture control" or "moisture retaining" soil that is popular in the Home Depot stores right now. Those are not suited for bougainvillea. Soil for cactus may be good for bougainvillea - as those are quick draining.

Our Select Soil is made up of 65% Pine Bark, which allows for water to drain easily, but still retain just the right amount of moisture. Look for any soil that contains a good percentage of pine bark. If you don't see any soil like that, you can always mix some pine bark into regular garden soil. Pine bark is readily available in most garden centers.

    Thank you for your question!

    Thanks so much!
    Another question for ya:
I was told by someone that if Im planting my bougainvillea in the yard to cut out the bottom of the plastic pot it came in and then plant the rest of the pot and bougainvillea. Her reasoning was that they like being pot bound and it helps keep the root system better contained. Is this ok to do?

Yes, that's the ideal way to plant bougainvillea in the ground. You want to keep that rootball contained and in one piece when planting. All new roots will come straight out of that opening that you cut out. If the pot's rim is sticking up out of the soil, you can cut that off, too.

Thank you Kellie! Im off to go plant these beautiful bougainvilleas. you've been a TON of help.
PS. Out of all bougainvilleas Ive seen at local nurseries, BGI has the pick of the litter. Ive never seen them so beautiful - great job.
  1.
I planted 12 yesterday and carefully took them out of the pots before doing so, will this hurt the liklihood of blooming etc?

As long as you didn't damage the roots during planting - they should be fine.
